Volunteers
Southern Ocean County Hospital is fortunate to benefit from the service of more than 1200 volunteers who invest their time and diverse abilities in Southern Ocean County Hospital and our patients.
Opportunities for volunteering are enormous. Hospital-based volunteers work within the Hospital and are required to provide as little as four hours per week working on patient floors, in clerical and administrative areas, in the emergency department, as transporters and dozens of other places. Volunteers serve in virtually every department at the Hospital and have contributed to the success of the Hospital since its opening in 1972. In 2005, our volunteers worked more than 120,000 hours at the Hospital.
Our Hospital-based volunteer program is separated into 10 VOLUNTEER CORPS. Each CORPS comes together twice each year to discuss common interests and ways they can make their volunteering more fulfilling and more beneficial to the Hospital. There is surely one VOLUNTEER CORPS that will interest you and all that’s required is to give just four (4) hours per week.

- Administrative/Clerical Registration
- Emergency Department Surgi-Centers
- Transportation Food Service
- Family Resource Center Gift Shop
- Volunteer Office
In addition to Hospital-based volunteering, some of our volunteers choose to work in one of the three SOCH Foundation’s Auxiliary thrift shops. Some volunteers work in the Boosters’ Auxiliary Bird Cage Gift Shop in the Hospital. Others work in social and fundraising programs for one of our four Auxiliaries. Whatever your pleasure, the SOCH Foundation will welcome you as a volunteer. Your time may be the greatest gift you can give.
Each year, Southern Ocean County Hospital honors its volunteers during National Volunteers Week in April. More than 300 volunteers attend the annual Volunteers Awards Lunch, which recognizes the work and achievements of Hospital-based volunteers. A separate Awards Lunch is held the same week for the 200 plus volunteers who work in thrift shops.
